About The Cathay Gallery
It all began with a journey. A young penniless immigrant left the impoverished shores of southern China by boat for Nanyang (Southern Ocean) in search of fortune. Like many immigrants before him, his “rags to riches” story was not achieved without hardship and suffering but his pioneering spirit, entrepreneurial accomplishments and philanthropy have been inspirations for his children and their children after them. The story of the Loke family and the Cathay Building can only begin with Loke Yew.
This gallery showcases the history of the Loke family and their various business interests in Malaysia and Singapore from the mid 1800’s till now. These business interests include tin mines, plantations, properties, film production studios, film distribution, hotels and cinemas. Today the family still owns the estates and properties established by Loke Yew and its business continues to focus on lifestyle, entertainment and hospitality in Singapore and Malaysia.
This unique collection of memorabilia that the family have kept over the years includes items related to their businesses, interests such as art and photography as well as personal items.

The Cathay Gallery presents African Journeys, an exhibition by the late Keith Joubert (1948 – 2013), one of South Africa’s leading painters of contemporary wildlife, environmental and tribal themes. The exhibition will showcase the exploration of Africa by Keith Joubert through 14 paintings that capture wildlife’s exhilarating subjects.
Keith Joubert painted Africa because it was his passion. He had made it his life’s mission to follow his own heart to the remote corners of Africa – examining its wealth of biodiversity and culture on a quest to understand its joys and anguish. Keith Joubert’s unique and individual style is shaped by observation, experience and many lessons learned. His extraordinary canvases are each a journey to examine our deeper selves and the beauty and drama that exists around us.
African Journeys is the first exhibition of Keith Joubert’s paintings in Singapore.
