Where To Dine For Affordable Korean Food
Korea is not just the country that gave us BTS and K-dramas, it is also the reason we get to indulge in the all-time favourite Bibimbap, Tteokbokki and Korean BBQ!
If you too can’t get enough of Korean cuisine, we’ve got a restaurant to recommend. Our trusty go-to restaurant for the past few years since it opened its doors at the basement of The Cathay in 2014, Ajumma’s offers delicious and affordable Korean dishes.
Fun fact: “Ajumma” means “Aunt” in Korean, and we all know our Mamas make the most delish and comforting food, exactly what you’ll get when you dine at Ajumma’s.
One of the most popular Korean street food, Tteokbokki is a beloved rice cake dish stir fried in a delicious spicy gochujang based sauce. It’s chewy texture makes it irresistible, and with the sweet and slightly spicy gochujang sauce, it’s a match made in heaven!
No matter what we decide to have for mains, this is always a must order as a sharing starter.
Anything that’s crispy is most likely yummy. The Chefs at Ajumma’s pay extra attention to ensure that the pancake batter is served crispy.
It’s not just about the batter, the pancake is packed with juicy prawns, squid and fragrant spring onions to ensure that you get a bit of the seafood goodness in every bite.
If seafood is not your thing, try the Kimchi Pancake.
FLUFFY STEAMED EGGS
“It’s so fluffy, I’m gonna die!” – Our reaction everytime we have this dish.
The airiness and fluffiness of this dish reminds us of a perfectly cooked souffle, almost melting in our mouth. Stewed in a light broth with a hint of roasted sesame oil, and served in a steaming hot pot, the Fluffy Steamed Eggs promises to warm the soul especially on rainy days.
SIGNATURE BEEF KALBI
You know it’s good when they label it a signature dish. Tender prime beef rib slices, marinated in Ajumma’s signature home-made kalbi sauce, this Beef Kalbi is tender, smokey, caramelized and full of flavor, just how a piece of beef should be enjoyed.
This alone (together with all the complimentary side dishes of course) is enough for us to devour the whole bowl of rice.
Cheese lovers, you can also choose to top the dish off with melted gooey cheese for an extra depth of flavour and creaminess.
Comfort food at its best!
We know, we know, often compared to our home-cooked maggi mee, but yet we find ourselves repeatedly ordering this. Maggi mee look-a-like yes, but you can never achieve such flavoursome broth with tender beef or pork when you cook it at home. It’s just different!
We love it because it’s so seemingly simple, but yet so satisfying.
And how can we ever forget about this Korean cuisine represent?
A simple but oh so hearty bowl of rice topped with as many as eight ingredients including shiitake mushrooms, egg, spinach, choice of beef, pork or chicken and more! All the vegetables are cooked and marinated separately, bringing out its individual flavor.
What’s more, Bibimbap is packed with nutrients, one more reason to love it!
There are of course many more delicious dishes on their menu such as the Army Stew and Ginseng Chicken, but these are just a few of our favourites.
Head down to The Cathay, basement 1 to try it for yourself!
