10 Movies That Are Turning 20 in 2017

We’re bringing nostalgia back to the 90s! Here’re 10 movies which are celebrating their 20th anniversary (based on their released dates in Singapore) in 2017! It’s hard to believe how time flies isn’t it?

 

STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT

The second featuring the crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and the eighth Star Trek film overall, this is one movie geeks of the 90s would fondly remember. Many will agree too that Star Trek: First Contact is one of the best of the series.

 

(Fun Fact: The first television series debuted in 1966, which makes the Star Trek franchise 51 years old)
 
 


ROMEO + JULIET

The film adaptation of one of William Shakespeare’s most famous plays about a pair of star crossed lovers. It’s been 2 decades since we first fell in love with Leonardo DiCaprio, experienced the hope and despair, love and tragedy of this doomed romance.

 

(Fun Fact: William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet was originally published 420 years ago!)
 
 
 


JERRY MAGUIRE

While Romeo + Juliet represents tragic love, Jerry Maguire has moments of love and hope that are so beautiful and real.

 

Jerry is a sports agent who was fired, then decides to start his own management firm with only the assistance of single mother Dorothy and sole client. Jerry and Dorothy begin to fall in love as they struggle to make their business work.

 

(Fun Fact: The everlasting phrase we still use today, “You had me at hello” was popularized by this movie)
 


THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK

Who knew watching human beings getting chased by dinosaurs would be this thrilling? The second instalment of the Jurassic Park film series sees a team returning to the island with the objective to catch and transport some of the dinosaurs to a new Jurassic Park location.

AUSTIN POWERS: INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY

Austin Powers ruled the 90s and early 2000. The franchise parodies numerous films and characters and incorporates myriad other elements of popular culture as it follows a British spy’s quest to bring his nemesis down.

 

(Fun Fact: Jim Carrey was approached to star as Dr Evil but had committed to making Liar Liar.)
 
 
 


MEN IN BLACK

The one movie that popularised black framed Ray-Ban shades in the 90s, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones teamed up as Agents Jay and Kay to control the large alien population living in New York City in Men In Black, the second highest grossing film in the US in 1997.

 

(Fun Fact: Will Smith came up with the plot for the film’s third installment – Men In Black 3 while filming Men In Black 2)
 
 
 


SCREAM

14 Aug 1997

 

Scream undoubtedly created one of the most iconic killers in movie history. Despite all the gore and chills, Scream kept audiences glued, and guessing the identity of the real killer behind that mask. The movie was so good, it went on to create 3 equally spectacular sequels.

 

(Fun Fact: All that tears were real. Director told animal lover Drew Barrymore stories about animal cruelty to get her into character.)

 
 


AIR FORCE ONE

Harrison Ford starred as the president of the United States whose plane was seized by hijackers. Remember rooting for the president as he took the hijackers by surprise fighting to take his plane back?

 

(Fun Fact: The AIA 747 used in the movie received a $300,000 paint job to replicate the real Air Force One)

 
 
 


MY BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING

90s rom-com represent! Julia Roberts star as Julianne who realizes she’s in love with her long-time friend when he revealed he’s engaged. She then sets out to get him with only days before the wedding. Not quite your typical rom-com with a happy ending, Julianne was left alone at the end of the movie.

 

(Fun Fact: The lead role of Julianne was originally offered to Sarah Jessica Parker.)
 
 
 


TITANIC

This movie needs no introduction. This epic romance-disaster film dominated 1997, earning 11 Academy Awards and was one of the highest-grossing movies of all time.

 

2 decades on, we’re still wondering why Rose allowed Jack to freeze to death by hogging on that door.

 

(Fun Fact: Kate Winslet admitted on Jimmy Kimmel Live that Jack could have indeed fit on that door.)
